Stuart Bell

StuartDirector - Policy

Stuart is a co-founder of Ergon and has more than 25 years experience in project management, strategic consulting, policy advice, and human rights and labour analysis for private companies, investors and civil society organisations.

At Ergon, he takes a particular interest in:

- management processes for delivering improvements in human rights and working conditions,

  • - implementing due diligence processes on labour and human rights
  • - human resource management approaches to improving labour standards
  • - corporate reporting on labour issues.

He has consulted to major international institutions and private sector companies, and has delivered projects in South Africa, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Egypt, Greece, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Turkey on agribusiness, electronics, construction and apparel. He has recently managed several assessments of ethical trade management and due diligence processes for brands and retailers.

Prior to Ergon, he was Research Director at Pensions & Investment Research Consultants (PIRC) managing information and proxy voting services for global institutional investors on responsible investment and corporate governance. He started his career as a Researcher at the UK Anti-Apartheid Movement.

Policy development and implementation

Developing a complaints mechanism for the London Olympics 2012

Ergon developed a process to deal with complaints about potential breaches of London 2012’s Sustainable Sourcing Code by contractors and suppliers. This is based on the Ruggie Principles and followed extensive stakeholder engagement. Click here for more information

Ergon is commissioned by a major brands and retailers to review their responsible sourcing programmes in order to help them identify labour risks, their strength and, weaknesses and areas for improvement, including comparison with peer companies and best practice standards. Strategy implementation within development finance
